Earlier this year, we trekked Alang Madan Kulang summit. The height of AMK forts is about 4852, 4841, 4822 feet respectively and is said to be the most difficult trek in the Sahyadris. It takes about 48-72 hours to complete the trek but we had set a goal to summit all the three mountains in one day and my, oh-my- the dense forest cover and the confusing paths didn't make it any easier.
We left Mumbai at 7pm on a Friday, reached Samrad village in the night, spent the night in a tent and started the trek at 5:30am. We hired a local guide to help us maneuver the path and my partner and the guide had to carry a huge haversack of approximately 12kgs each which had our supplies like equipments, gears, raw food etc.
We reached Alang caves at around 8am, after a quick breakfast abseiled, trad- climbed and hiked to Madan summit by noon, trekked downhill, abseiled again and hiked after 50 feet rock-climbing to reach Kulang at 4pm. We stayed the night in a tent inside a dark cave at Kulang summit with bare minimum supplies and left early in the morning the next day to reach Samrad.
We had been planning this trek for quite some time and finally did it and made it back in one piece with multiple blood clots & numerous cuts in our hands and legs. On our way back we found a shedded skin of a snake, which is considered to bring good luck as per the locals. We left the same day after having lunch at our guide's home and reached Mumbai after driving for about 4.5 hours.
I wouldn't lie, the trek was difficult, even though we are pretty regular at it. However, this is one of the most wholesome treks which has abseiling, trad climbing, mountain hiking, spending the night on a mountain summit, constellation gazing and we did it all and more.
Happy trekking!
